The mystery of the recent plethora of illegible, badly written and uninteresting reviews unearthed!

I'm told students at the Design and Arts College of New Zealand have been instructed, indeed assigned the task of writing a review and publishing it on Artbash.

If you want to find them, (It's easy to pick them (and not just because they're not written by John Hurrell) look for the "I went to X gallery and saw a show by X", (what a great opening sentence!) followed by a brief press-release description of the work and bio of the artist(s)).

Is this in retaliation for Artbash's unearthing of D&A student plagiarism? Or merely an attempt to take Artbash to a new low, from John Hurrell's stomping ground to one for students who couldn't even get into a real art school?

Hey, why the indignation? If you scroll through some of the Wellington and (occasional) Auckland reviews there are student writers present. Remember everybody has to start somewhere and art criticism needs to be nourished in this country. Let's not scare them away. We need a lot more writers for Artbash. Especially in Christchurch. The only thing we need to get rid of is the use of pseudonyns.

Sadly some of those are rather similar to the reviews we see in The Press, which are often more like press releases than reviews as well. The thing I would suggest to potential critics-reviewers is to have an opinion and be bold enough to express it! give your reader something to think about rather than just a bland description of whats in the show.

Good on the Arts and Design College students for giving reviewing a go. I hope they can contribute more to help keeping this site's readers informed. They needn't worry about a little criticism. The first thing all art reviewers have to learn is to develop the hide of a rhino. They learn to have confidence in their opinions and not get fazed when people get upset by what they read.

Is this arts & design school in South Island worthy of sending your children to learn a skill, a career and a future?

Given what happens to Christchurch recently I wonder if the college would be motivated to dip deep in their pockets to restore this art school and its teaching facilities?

Any comments from anyone would be appreciated.
