Whether a genius or not, that is irrelevant. He didn't invent the brand, but he was the brand. He could be as 'alky' as he wanted, being a poster boy for the West (as the ultimate expression of individuality against those horrible commies and their singular mind). The 'ton of hard work' was all the result of the vested interests of a government and media desperate to display just how noble and superior individualistic (read neo-liberal) endeavour supposedly is. He didn't need to do a thing besides play out all the stereotypes of the artist that already existed in the public mind. What a puppet.
