looking to join a young artistic community

I am coming to this forum in search of real authentic information. I am not from New Zealand but I am an artist and I am planning on coming to NZ in a few months. I want to know how the young art scene is? I am looking to join a group of welcoming artists or free spirited individuals. I suppose something like an artistic community writers, musicians, performance and traditional artists alike. I am looking for a place to live that is inexpensive or perhaps trade work for housing while creating there. I primarily do photography but have become more interconnected with photography and performance work.
So where does one in NZ find a place like this? Even on the web it is hard to tell just how the art scene is.
Please send any info, links, anything my way.

this question reminds me of a German artist on a residency who asked us to find her some refugee children for her art project. She seemed to think we might have a jar of them in the garden shed for her to use.
